Understanding Human-Wildlife Conflict

Newspaper article analysis is a powerful research strategy to measure human perception of wildlife. By creating a tool that can filter for relevant article titles, we can enhance media research on Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC). Below are some resources to help you dive deeper into this topic!

HWC is a socio-ecological issue that captures the complex interaction of people and animals in the wild.

With habitat loss and human population growth on the rise, there is increasing competition between people and wildlife over limited resources and land. Examples of this conflict include elephants destroying crops in Thailand or leopards preying on livestock in the Himalayas. In response, humans sometimes retaliate and kill the species disturbing their livelihoods.

This can directly endanger the species, and indirectly endanger the health of the broader ecosystem.

HWC and Conservation Policy

HWC is a hot topic in conservation policy, where balancing human and wildlife needs is crucial.

Managing human-wildlife conflict is one of the key targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework, cementing the issue on the stage of international policy. This target works to promote the coexistence of humans and wildlife in nature as an important step to facilitate the broader agenda of halting nature loss by 2030.

Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence

In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) formed a specialist group dedicated to Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence. This group works to protect both human livelihoods and species survival through research and policy.
