This project is a collaboration between Canterbury Museum and the University of Canterbury, both located in Christchurch, New Zealand. The G. R. Macdonald Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies, presented to Canterbury Museum in 1964 and comprised of over 12,000 index cards, provides an extensive collection of biographical information the Canterbury region. The Dictionary, however, lacks indexed information on women, as the biographical cards were traditionally organised by the male heads of the households. By transcribing names and supporting information, this project will, to an extent, address this bias and provide a much better searchable index of names for research use.
