About Genome Detectives

Bacterial infections remain a major threat to human health. Despite the positive impacts of vaccinations and antibiotics in preventing and treating the diseases that they cause, many people of all ages still die from bacterial infections throughout the world each year. The problem has been worsened by increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and new (emerging) diseases, as underlined by the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) coronavirus pandemic.

We work to improve understanding of bacterial diseases by studying bacterial genomes, generating information that helps doctors decide how to prevent or treat bacterial disease by taking public health action, such as developing and using vaccines, food safety measures, and combatting AMR.
