We're looking for asteroids with tails like comets. These are really neat because nobody knows exactly why a regular old asteroid might wind up with a tail! To do it we're using images from the Subaru telescope, one of the most sensitive in the world.
chadtrujilloIn this project, participants will see images of comets, asteroids, trans-Neptunian objects, and other minor planets. All of the images were collected with one of the most powerful telescopes in the world, the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, using the Hyper Suprime-Cam instrument. The Subaru Telescope is located at one of the best astronomical sites on Earth: Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The goal of this project is to identify previously unrecognized comet-like activity among asteroids and other minor planets in our Solar System.
