Many researchers believe that manatees have a limited communication system and mainly communicate between mother and calf. However, the Manatee Chat project shows that manatees produce quite a diverse range of sounds, indicating that manatees are more social and more vocal than we once thought.

This project will investigate the form and function of manatee vocalizations, and it will allow us to learn more about what signals manatees produce, what potential function they might serve, and what differences individual manatee calls have.
