Join a global effort to track environmental damage caused by armed conflict using satellite imagery
Learn moreIf you are new to WISEN WATCH, you may find it easier to start with images from Iran, where damaged structures are often larger and easier to distinguish than in Lebanon

Healthy environments and functioning ecosystems underpin human health, wellbeing and livelihoods but can be harmed or disrupted by armed conflicts. This can accelerate biodiversity loss, pollution and land degradation, and exacerbate the environmental impacts of the climate crisis.
WISEN WATCH uses satellite imagery to help document the environmental impacts of armed conflict. Volunteers review images of locations identified through radar-based change detection and look for visible signs of damage, such as scorch marks, craters or destroyed infrastructure. These classifications support the first stage of the WISEN environmental harm database, helping researchers identify damaged facilities and build an open record of conflict-related environmental harm. By contributing just a few minutes of time, participants can support environmental monitoring, research, and public understanding of the wider impacts of war.
