Hi there! This beta project is different than the ones you'll usually encounter on Zooniverse. That's because this project is a testing area for the new collaborative transcription task, based on tools originally created for the Anti-Slavery Manuscripts project.
THIS IS NOT AN ACTIVE RESEARCH PROJECT, IT IS FOR TESTING ONLY. The data in this project has already been transcribed. We need you to help us test the new tools as we prepare to include them in the Zooniverse Project Builder.
The Transcription Task is a generalized version of the tool we built for the Anti-Slavery Manuscripts project, as part of an IMLS-funded research project called "Transforming Libraries and Archives Through Crowdsourcing." As part of that effort, we created a transcription tool that allowed volunteers to see what others had transcribed for a certain line, rather than everyone transcribing independently of one another.
In a comparative test, we found that this 'collaborative' method produced higher-quality transcription data (i.e. transcriptions that were closer to the 'correct' transcription) than individual transcription methods. Read the full paper here.
