What kinds of accidents happened as machines were introduced in 1800s Britain? Help us understand when, where and how machines were involved in accidents, who was affected, and how newspapers reported on accidents near and far.

Look at the article text and answer simple questions about it. Note: some language in these 19th century articles can be upsetting for modern readers.

About Living with Machines

How did the introduction of machines into the workplace and landscape during the Industrial Revolution change the lives of ordinary people in the nineteenth century?

Living with Machines is a multidisciplinary research collaboration between the British Library and Alan Turing Institute with the Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia, Exeter, and London (QMUL, King’s College). We're using data science to ask historical questions and find new insights from millions of pages of newspapers, maps, books and more. The crowdsourcing tasks on this site are a vital part of our research and outreach plans. The data you contribute may also be used to train machine learning algorithms, and to improve search results and classifications within the project.
