Planetary Response Network: Venezuela Earthquake 2026

We have analysed all major roads across Venezuela from three different dates since the devastating Earthquakes took place. We assessed imagery taken on the 26th June 2026, then updated this with imagery from the 1st July and the final update for 5th July 2026. Each date was used to provide road blockage data, and then followups to humanitarian organisations.

The data was uploaded to the Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX), for humanitarian organisations working in the region to use. HDX is a data sharing platform, run by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, for humanitarian professionals to distribute and collect data relevant to the humanitarian response.

So far the datasets have been downloaded 68 times to be used during the logistical planning during the emergency response phase of the crisis. This data is being used to get an understanding of which roads are blocked, and the type and severity of the blockages.

The classifications from this project, identifying road blockages, generated highly accurate results. The project clearly identified road blockages in built up areas, due to debris; alongside locations where roads were damaged due to coastal water and erosion. This data has been very useful for humanitarian organisations (such as the World Food Program) to identify which roads are blocked, and may want to be cleared or avoided during route planning exercises.
