About Maize Leaf Count

At the UNL innovation campus, a greenhouse is home to around 300 maize plants. Each day several images of each plant is taken and stored for the purpose of identifying physical traits that can help characterize the plant's phenotype. Traits such as leaf count and the time that a tassel emerges after sprouting can give researchers a part of the picture that along with many other characteristics, can help us decode the genome of Maize. With help from anyone who is willing and able, we can establish a large training data set that will enable us to train a machine learning model accurate enough to use in practice for the automated annotation of these images.
