Transcribing and categorizing collections for and with Gullah Geechee communities
Learn moreHelp uncover hidden portions of Black history. Help transcribe plantation records to find names, transcribe audio to help learn more about our interviews, and identify old songs from the Baptist, African Methodist, and United Methodist traditions. Discover hidden stories within documents hundreds of years old or interviews recorded just a few weeks ago. Your work will help create new ways of accessing materials from the Library of Congress, South Carolina Historical Society, and the National Archives.

Through this project, we engage with narratives and histories collected over time, and make sure that these stories are heard and appreciated by Gullah Geechee communities and the wider public. In our collection, we have digitized over 6,900 artifacts that span from the 18th century to the present, which includes oral histories, photographs, and plantation records. Our mission is to make this information more accessible to the public, while doing so in a way that is culturally sensitive and ethically responsible.
