The Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) maintains a world-class natural history collection composed of 4.3 million artifacts and specimens. The Museums collections contain scientifically and culturally significant objects in archaeology, ethnology, geology, paleontology, health sciences, zoology and the library and archives. While every object in the collection holds a unique and intrinsic value, what truly makes them valuable to science is the associated data and metadata collected with and generated from these object. In the last 120 years since the museum's founding, much of this data was recorded in handwritten field notes, specimen tags, card catalogs, ledgers and miscellaneous scraps of paper (even the occasional cigarette carton). Since the emergence of computer technology for data storage and manipulation, a portion of these data have transcribed into a variety of digital databases in a range of formats. Yet much data remains hidden in those handwritten sources, practically inaccessible to science for most modern day investigations.
DMNS has a long history of utilizing volunteer efforts to support the cataloging and digitization of collection data. As the residents of Denver and surrounding communities have logged countless hours and tireless effort in the museum's collections, we now seek online volunteers willing to devote the same passion and dedication to continue the advancement of science.
