Message from the researcher
We hold a major part of the history of the disappearing Istro-Romanian language, which could so easily have been lost forever. Thanks to the Hurren Donation, and with the help of native speakers, the ISTROX project is giving this material back to the Istro-Romanian community and opening it up to everyone interested in the language.
ISTROXAbout ISTROX
ISTROX (‘ISTRO-ROMANIAN LANGUAGE AT OXFORD’) is a two-year interdisciplinary project at Oxford University.
It aims to conserve and explore part of the history of Istro-Romanian language, better known to its speakers as Vlaški or Žejanski, and recognized by UNESCO as "severely endangered".
Today it has at most a few hundred speakers in Istria (Croatia) and in several émigré communities worldwide.
In 2010, Mrs Vera Hurren donated to Oxford a collection of sound recordings made in Istria during the 1960s by her husband, the linguist Tony Hurren.
To open up this material to linguists and the Istro-Romanian community, we aim to translate and explain it, with the help of speakers in Croatia and worldwide.
