About Huddersfield Mechanics Institute founders
This research project will trace the lives and careers of the early members of the Huddersfield Mechanics Institute, which was founded in 1841 and went on to become the University of Huddersfield. The source document is the 1844 members book and we believe it represents the first c. 2800 members in order of when they joined. We do not know when the book goes up to.
It is hoped that this project will allow us to do two things: understand more about the people who studied at the early institute and their background and also show how their lives might have been affected by their learning.
The numbering in the book is inconsistent so please be assured all pages have been digitised faithfully
