Calgary is rich in natural environments, comprising 50% of our city's 8000 hectares of park space. In a city of 1.25 million people, Parks leads the conservation and restoration of natural areas using innovative practices, tools and technologies. Our network of parks gives Calgarians vital spaces to have fun, be close to nature and also provides important homes for urban wildlife. Our long term vision is to manage urban ecosystems to provide quality of life for present and future generations.
The Miistakis Institute is a research institute affiliated with Mount Royal University that brings people and ideas together to promote healthy communities and landscapes. At Miistakis we study the landscape so we can help people conserve it; and we celebrate innovative research by making it accessible to communities and decision-makers. The communities we work with can be landowners and their networks, any level of government, visionary corporations, leading edge scientists, environmental NGO’s – anyone in need of science-based support for practical, sustainable, resource management decision-making. The areas where we focus our efforts are transportation ecology, ecosystem services, private land conservation, sustainable landscapes and communities, citizen science for conservation, and wildlife management. In all cases, our approach is the same: identify the need, define the problem, solve the problem.
